Search launched for overdue boat

A three-hour search was carried out in Western Bay of Plenty last night after a boat carrying three men was reported overdue.

The boat had left Sulphur Point in downtown Tauranga, destined for Motuotau Island off Mount Maunganui beach, and was expected back by sundown.

It returned to Sulphur Point at 11.45pm, with the occupants telling police they had been fishing under the Harbour Bridge.

One man on board had a cellphone but didn't tell family of the change in plans.

Police urged all boaties to tell someone on shore of their destination, ETA, and any change of plans.

All people on board should have a life jacket, and each boat should have two working forms of communication.
