Bus passenger robs driver of cashbox

A bus driver was robbed of her cash box by a passenger in the Hutt Valley last night.

A man boarded the Valley Flyer bus at a stop just before the Rimutaka Tavern on Fergusson Drive, Upper Hutt, about 10pm, Detective Sergeant Richard Orr said.

The bus was travelling route 110 to Gemstone Drive.

As the bus came to the end of it's route near State Highway 2, the man approached the driver shoulder charging her before running off with her cash box.

He was described as Maori or Polynesian aged in his mid 20s, about 170cms, slim build with short dark hair.

He was wearing a black sweat shirt, black pants and pulled a red bandana up over his face.

The cash box was black metal, 40cm by 20cm with a handle and a piece of tape with the number 44 written on the top.

The other passengers on the bus were a male and female who got off the bus shortly after the man got on, and another female who got off the bus on Gemstone Drive, Mr Orr said.

Police would like to hear from those passengers and anyone who had seen the cash box or knew who the man was.
