Central Otago man charged over pursuit

A central Otago man (25) is due to appear in the Invercargill District Court today facing numerous charges, following an abandoned police pursuit, ending in a multiple crash that significantly damaged several cars in Invercargill.

Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken said a car was seen swerving on State Highway 1, between Edendale and Woodlands, about 4.40pm yesterday and was signalled to stop by police, but it continued on and was pursued, until the pursuit was abandoned near a residential area.

The car then crashed at the intersection of Antrim and Newcastle Streets in Invercargill, after appearing to have sideswiped a parked car, then spun into a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction.

Snr Sgt Aitken said the Central Otago man was treated for minor facial abrasions, and the female driver of the other car was uninjured. Both vehicles bore significant damage.

The man faces charges of disqualified driving, dangerous driving, failing to stop, and refusing to give a blood sample.
