Christchurch man dies after Taiwan crash

A Christchurch man has died after a scooter crash in Taiwan.

Tim Pennington, a 26-year-old who was living in Taichung, Taiwan with his wife Sara, died overnight in intensive care.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it was aware of the former Riccarton High and University of Canterbury student's death "as the result of a motorcycle accident".

"We have offered our condolences and consular assistance to his wife in Taiwan," a spokesperson said.

Mr Pennington married his wife Sara, who is also from Christchurch, last April.

Her Facebook feed is full of messages acknowledging her loss.

Mr Pennington's parents, Eric and Karen are currently flying over to Taiwan.

Rebecca Pennington said her brother had moved to Taiwan in September.

The accident happened yesterday, she said, but wouldn't go into details.

"We're not prepared to discuss that at this stage," she said.

"We're only just coming to terms with it at the moment."

His grandmother in Christchurch, Dorothy Pennington added: "It's still hard to accept."
