Missing tramper located in Westland

Police are no longer concerned for a tramper who was reported overdue in South Westland.

Greymouth police senior constable Mike Tinnelly this morning appealed for information about Gabriel Mabbs, 62, from Wakefield.

Ms Mabbs rang her mother from Hokitika on April 3 to say she was heading south and intended to do a six-day tramp. She did not mention where and was not believed to have been heard from since.

This afternoon Mr Tinnelly said police no longer required information about Ms Mabbs as she had been located safe and well.

She was speaking with residents at the Gorge River south of Cascade Point yesterday. She was continuing north on her tramp back to her vehicle at Cascade car park and was expected to be back out later today or tomorrow.

Mr Tinnelly had this morning said police were unable to begin an official search for Ms Tinnelly because they didn't know where to look. They only knew she was somewhere south of Hokitika.

He said the lack of information was "quite frustrating".

Ms Mabbs hadn't left any intentions and was two days overdue. She was an experienced, well-equipped tramper and had a distress beacon.
