Officer seriously hurt in Auckland assault

The police officer seriously assaulted while attending an incident at Glen Innes this morning has been discharged from hospital.

It is understood the officer, who suffered head injuries, was recovering at home. He was initially transported to hospital with status two, serious, injuries.

The officer was surrounded and assaulted while trying to stop a brawl at a the Mobil service station on Apirana Ave, Glen Innes at about 12:15am. He was deployed to the scene after police received reports of a large number of people fighting.

He was attacked by a number of people and suffered a laceration to the back of his head among other injuries.

Two men were being interviewed by police over the incident.

More information is expected to be released this morning.
