Rain eases, care still urged on roads

While the worst of the Easter storm that slammed the country may have passed, the effects of the heavy rain are still evident in many places, and several South Island roads remain closed.

North of Dunedin, caution is still urged on SH1 between Maheno and Oamaru, which was closed for a lengthy period yesterday.

Further north, SH1 between Blenheim and Kaikoura now has one lane open, and there are closures on Banks Peninsula.

The weather looks set to improve in most places today: low cloud and drizzle about the coast is predicted to clear in Otago, giving way to a fine day with high cloud. Those same conditions are expected inland in the region.

Southlanders can also look forward to a mainly fine day.

The news is not so good for the sodden West Coast, where heavy falls are expected south of Otira.
