Boy killed in driveway accident

A 5-year-old boy died in a driveway incident in Pokeno this afternoon.

Police said the boy was unable to be revived and passed away at the scene.

It was understood the boy and a sibling were riding on the trailer, carrying a small digger, which was being towed by a 4X4 vehicle.

The serious crash unit and police photographer are at the scene and the incident will be investigated.

"This is an incredibly tragic scene for everyone involved,'' says Inspector Neil Fisher, Counties Manukau road policing manager.

"It will take some time to establish exactly what happened and we won't be able to comment on the cause of the crash until the investigation has progressed. In the meantime we will do everything we can to support the family.''

It's the second fatal incident involving a child in Counties Manukau District in only two weeks, following the death of a 2-year-old in Papatoetoe on April 9, and the second incident involving a child and a trailer.

A 9-year-old boy received injuries after slipping under a trailer in Takanini on April 12.
