Crashes slow Nth Island traffic

Police are warning motorists of significant delays to travel on the northwestern motorway in Auckland after a serious crash this morning.

The accident happened in the city bound lanes just before 5am under the Carrington Rd overbridge.

One person suffered serious injuries, Inspector Kerry Watson said.

Police warned as of 6am there was already considerable congestion - which would get worse.

Traffic was being diverted onto Great North Rd, Waterview.

Motorists were advised to avoid the area or face delays.

Meanwhile, delays are expected after a truck and trailer unit flipped in the Waikato today.

The crash happened on Karangahake Gorge Road, 18km east of Paeroa about 3.40am , Insp Watson said.

The road has been partly closed while heavy moving equipment clears the area.

One lane would remain open most of the time until it was clear, Insp Watson said.

Considerable congestion was likely to occur and it was estimated the road would not be clear for some time.
