Gun fired in Wellington CBD

A 35-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly firing a gun in central Wellington overnight.

Police were called after gunshots were heard near the Sirocco Apartments on Church Street, about 1am, Senior Sergeant Marc Clausen from central police communications said.

The male was heard yelling before the firearm, believed to be a shotgun, was discharged twice.

He was then seen walking up some stairs at the end of Church Street that lead up to The Terrace, Mr Clausen said.

Several witnesses who had heard the male yelling and the firearm being discharged, saw him later go into an apartment building on The Terrace.

Police cordoned off the property and waited for the Armed Offenders Squad to arrive.

A short section of The Terrace was closed for nearly two hours while the police cordon was in place, Mr Clausen said.

Armed police arrested the man, who was with a female associate.

The male was taken in to custody without incident and will be appearing in the Wellington District Court tomorrow on firearms related charges.

No one was injured and it wasn't thought any property was damaged in the incident.

The gun has not yet been found and police were continuing the search for it this morning, Mr Clausen said.

If anyone had any information regarding the incident, they could contact Wellington Police on (04) 3812000 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
