Power out to thousands in Auckland

There'll be no hot cup of tea or coffee for several thousand south Aucklanders getting up for work this morning.

Power is out to a large part of South Auckland after a burst of heavy rain.

The blackout covers Otahuhu, Papatoetoe and Mangere and has knocked out some traffic lights in the area.

Vector Communications Manager, Sandy Hodge, says around 2200 households are affected.

"There's a Mangere East feeder, which looks as though it was taken about 3:25am when the bad weather came through.

"The fault we're patrolling at the moment, obviously we think some vegetation has struck some lines out there with the bad weather."

Vector communications manager Sandy Hodge says crews are working on the fault and had hoped to have power restored by around 7.30am.
