Man in court on kidnap charge

The grandfather of a Riverton baby who died after receiving serious injuries in January is charged with kidnapping the boy's father at gunpoint and threatening to assault him.

The baby died in Starship Hospital in Auckland on January 15. Police were told he had been injured in a fall at his home two days earlier.

Yesterday a 49-year-old Riverton man appeared in the Invercargill District Court on four charges relating to an incident on March 18.

He was jointly charged with a 27-year-old Blenheim woman. She appeared in the Blenheim District Court yesterday.

He was remanded without plea to reappear on May 30. Police would not elaborate yesterday on the March incident, saying the matter was now before the courts.

A police investigation into the baby's death began on January 17.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Bowman, of Invercargill, said yesterday the investigation was continuing and no-one had been charged with any offence.
