The man who died on an onshore oil rig in Taranaki yesterday has been named by police.

He was 39-year-old Rotorua man Nicholas John Teague.

Mr Teague collapsed on the oil drilling derrick about 40 metres off the ground at the Mangakewa E Wellsite in Tikorangi, police said.

Emergency services were called to the scene, near Waitara, just after 8am, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was employed by MB Century, the company with the contract to carry out the work at the Todd Energy site.

MB Century chief executive Marcel Manders said there were no indications as to why Mr Teague collapsed.

Police and Work Safe NZ were investigating the incident and the death had been referred to the coroner.
