Elderly man bashed in home invasion

An elderly man was bashed in a late night home invasion in Gisborne.

The 74-year-old was set upon in his Mangapapa home about 11.50pm on Friday.

"He suffered injuries in the attack," said Detective Sergeant Steve Smith. "Scratches to his arms and bruising to his back that did not require medical treatment."

Police want to speak to 22-year-old Tutawake Maxwell in relation to the incident.

"An intruder broke into the home where the elderly man was asleep inside," said Det Sgt Smith.

"It is alleged the intruder attacked him and demanded the keys to his vehicle but did not actually take the vehicle."

Police have yet to determine what was taken from the house.

The man was able to get away from the intruder but not before he suffered moderate injuries.

"There was a struggle before the intruder left. It's a serious incident that involved an attack on an elderly person in his own home.

"It is important the person wanted in relation to the incident is apprehended as soon as possible," said Det Sgt Smith.

A warrant was issued this morning for Mr Maxwell's arrest.

"We are looking for him and want any information we can get from the public in relation to his whereabouts."
