A woman has died in a car crash near Gisborne tonight.
Danger from electrical cables, brought down in the crash, prevented immediate rescue attempts, but police said it appeared the driver may have died instantly when the incident occurred.
She was the only person in the vehicle.
Police believed the car struck a power pole just before 7pm.
Emergency services gained access to the vehicle after the power lines were made safe by electricity company staff.
The woman's name and age have not been confirmed and next of kin are yet to be informed.
The cause of the crash is unknown at this stage although road conditions in the area were reported to be wet, police said.
