Three killed in Canterbury crash

Three people have been killed in a crash near Rakaia.

Details of the crash were still sketchy but Ashburton Police senior sergeant Scott Banfield confirmed three people had been killed and two injured.

The crash occurred at the intersection of Thompsons Track and Somerton Road shortly before 4pm.

The road was closed and the police serious crash unit was at the scene.

Two vehicles collided at the intersection, which is controlled by a stop sign, police said.

"One vehicle had four occupants of which three have died," Mr Banfield said.

"The fourth passenger has been transported to hospital by means of a rescue helicopter.

"The other vehicle had one occupant who has minor injuries and is being treated at hospital."
