Charges laid over fatal Nth Island crash

An American man has been charged over the death of Auckland woman Robyn Derrick, who died in crash involving a campervan in Coromandel last week.

The 23-year-old man will appear in court today charged with charged with careless driving causing death and careless driving causing injury.

He was the driver of a campervan that allegedly crossed the centreline and crashed into an oncoming four-wheel drive State Highway 25 at Whenuakite about 6.30pm on Friday night.

"Both the driver and his passenger have been co-operating fully with police throughout the course of the investigation," Waikato road policing manager Inspector Freda Grace said.

Mrs Grace said police expressed their sympathies to the family of Mr Derrick.

Hers was the first death of the Queens Birthday holiday period.

A total of five people were killed on the roads over the long weekend.
