Two die in North Island accidents

Two people have been killed in separate accidents in the North Island this morning.

A pedestrian died after being struck by a truck in Auckland just before 5.30am, police said.

The incident happened at the intersection of The Strand and Tamaki Drive in Parnell.

The serious crash unit is investigating.

Earlier, one person was killed in a head-on collision between a truck and a car in the Bay of Plenty.

The crash happened around 3.20am on State Highway 1 about 5km south of Kinleith.

The car driver died a few minutes after emergency services arrived at the scene, police said.

The truck driver was uninjured.

The serious crash unit will investigate.

Traffic would be diverted via SH 30/31, through Whakamaru and then via State Highway 32, until the road was cleared, police said.
