Baby in critical condition

Police have charged a Hamilton man with assault on a child after an 8-month-old baby suffered major head injuries this morning and was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

Waikato Acting Detective Inspector Mark Greene said the 32-year-old man, who lived at the York St address with the baby, had been arrested and will appear in the Hamilton District Court tomorrow.

He confirmed it was a domestic violence incident.

"At this stage the baby remains in a critical condition and is likely to be transferred to Auckland's Starship Hospital later today for more specialist care," Mr Greene said.

The home remains under guard and will be the subject of a scene examination by forensic experts tomorrow.

"Currently it is not a case where police are seeking specific answers as to what happened, more it is a case of identifying the questions we seek answers to, and until such time as we have identified these, it would be inappropriate to speculate further.

"The only thing further we can confirm is that this incident was one of a domestic nature, and domestic violence is no respecter of class or station, it affects persons from all walks of life.

"Our message is -- there is plenty of help available, you just need to take the first step and ask for help."
