Stabbed man flees Hastings house

A Hastings man who was stabbed in the head and neck fled a Camberley house after the attack left him in a critical condition.

Detective Sergeant Brent Greville told Hawke's Bay Today yesterday, police were conducting a scene examination at a Kotuku St home, where a 39-year-old man had been stabbed "a few times" to the head and neck on Sunday afternoon.

Police said the stabbing victim managed to make his way to a Raureka house in Hastings about 4.45pm before being taken to Hawke's Bay Hospital.

Mr Greville said police were still looking for the weapon used in the assault but had a person in custody.

Police said the alleged offender was arrested a short time later at a Flaxmere house. A 28-year-old man appeared in the Hastings District Court yesterday on a charge of assault.

He was granted interim name suppression and remanded in custody until August.

A Hawke's Bay Hospital spokeswoman said the victim was now in a stable condition.
