Man charged after cleaver attack

A man accused of assaulting another man with a meat cleaver at a Wairoa hotel in February has been arrested.

The Armed Offenders Squad helped Dargaville police arrest the 22-year-old on Monday afternoon at a Baylys Beach address. He initially tried to run off but was caught soon after, Acting Whangarei/Kaipara Area Commander Inspector Justin Rogers said.

The 22-year-old allegedly assaulted another man with a weapon believed to be a meat cleaver outside the Northern Wairoa Hotel in February.

He was charged with breaching parole and wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He was remanded in custody and would appear in the Whangarei District Court on July 21, police said.
