Grandmother bashed during Auckland burglary

A grandmother who was caring for her grandchild was hit over the head and hospitalised during a burglary in Auckland.

A man entered a residential home yesterday morning on Aspiring Avenue in Clover Park, Flat Bush, police said.

A 66-year-old grandmother was home at the time, caring for her nine-month-old grandchild.

She was confronted by the intruder who physically assaulted her, and she was hospitalised with serious head injuries.

The offender left the address with a laptop computer.

Detective Senior Sergeant Darrell Harpur said the level of violence used in the attack was concerning and police asked that anyone with information contacted them immediately.

"Just after the attack a person was seen walking out of the victim's driveway onto Aspiring Avenue and we hope that this person can help us with our enquiries," he said.

The person is described as a male Maori or Polynesian of medium build and height, with bushy afro type hair tied back with a white hair tie or band, and with facial hair or a beard. He is possibly aged around the late 20s to mid 30s, police said.

Anyone with information should contact Constable Aron Singh or Detective Senior Sergeant Darrell Harpur at Counties Manukau East Police on 09 250 2800.
