One dead in North Island crash

One person has died following a two car collision in the Kaimai Ranges this afternoon.

The head-on crash took place on State Highway 29, not far from the summit on the Hamilton side, around 4pm, police said.

Reports from the scene indicate that one person had died.

The serious crash unit has been sent to investigate.

SH29 has been closed to traffic.

"Police are well aware that the only options for motorists and transport companies are via either Rotorua or Paeroa and will be actively reviewing the situation to enable the road to be reopened as soon as possible."

Further south, an injured man had to be cut from his vehicle after a two-car crash near Katikati this afternoon.

The trapped man suffered serious injuries in the collision, which occurred on Wright Rd, Aongatete, around 2pm.

A woman was also injured in the crash, sustaining moderate injuries, northern ambulance communications shift manager Norm Ngatai said.

When ambulance and fire crews arrived on the scene, they found one man trapped in a vehicle and had to be cut free, Mr Ngatai said.

Both the man and woman were taken to Tauranga Hospital for treatment.

It was not clear if they were the two drivers of the vehicles, he said.
