Kiwi falls to death in Queensland

The New Zealand woman who fell to her death at a Surfers Paradise high-rise apartment building was in Australia for a two-week holiday that included attending a wedding, Queensland Police say.

Police have formally identified the woman as 26-year-old Warriena Tagpuno Wright, of Lower Hutt.

Police said she arrived in Australia alone on July 29, 2014 for the holiday.

Ms Wright fell 14 storeys after visiting Gable Tostee, 28, at his apartment after meeting him through an online dating app, the Courier Mail reported.

Witnesses described hearing a woman scream, and it is believed a neighbour called emergency services after seeing her fall.

Police arrived a short time later but Mr Tostee had left the scene, the newspaper reported.

He handed himself in to detectives about 11am local time yesterday and was questioned for more than two hours at Surfers Paradise Police Station.

He was released without charge after being taken for forensic testing.

Regional Crime Coordinator Detective Superintendent David Hutchinson said police were treating the death as suspicious as a matter of procedure.

Police wish to speak with anyone who met Warriena since her arrival in Australia or has any information about her activities, movements or companions whilst in Australia.

Detectives are also appealing for anyone who may have any information which could assist the police investigation to contact Gold Coast police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
