A man who died on Saturday after falling from a balcony at the Beachfront Hotel in Hokitika has been named.
He was 58-year-old Geoffrey Leslie McFadden of Leeston in Canterbury.
Police said Mr McFadden's family did not wish to make any public comment.
Mr McFadden fell 16 metres from the third-storey of the hotel about midnight and died on the way to hospital.
He and his wife had been staying in Hokitika with friends.
