Inquest starts into IV line death

An inquest has begun into the death of a woman in Christchurch Hospital after an intravenous line pierced her heart.

52-year-old Tracey-Jane Havill Nelson died in June 2012 after the line pierced her heart, causing a fatal build-up of fluid.

Canterbury District Health Board specialist surgeon Dr Grant Coulter treated Ms Havill Nelson before her admission to hospital.

He told the inquest in a statement that she was admitted to hospital after experiencing nausea from a previous operation.

Her husband, Keith Nelson, believes the hospital could have done more for his wife and is angry no-one has been held accountable.
