Woman seriously hurt in car plunge

A woman suffered serious injuries when her car crashed down a 30-metre bank and landed in a swamp in South Taranaki.

Police said the 67-year-old woman was driving on State Highway 3, just north of Te Toti Road in South Taranaki when she lost control and the car left the road.

Police were alerted to the crash around 9am and found the car down the bank and in a swamp where it landed on its wheels.

The woman was cut free from the vehicle and flown to Taranaki Base Hospital.

Police said she received head, spine and rib injuries in the crash, and was in a serious but stable condition.

One lane of SH3 was closed for a short period and traffic was now flowing normally.

Police would be investigating.
