Teen killed in Christchurch fire named

The teenager who died after becoming trapped in a house fire in Christchurch early this morning has been named by police.

Corey James McLean (16) is believed to have rescued a pregnant girl from the blaze at the Medina Cres, Parklands, property, before somehow becoming trapped and unable to escape the fire himself.

Seven other occupants of the house were treated for smoke inhalation at Christchurch Hospital, and have since been discharged, police said.

The fire broke out around 4.10am, with neighbours reporting hearing screams and explosions.

Police and Fire Service investigators have spent the day conducting a scene examination to determine the cause of the fire. They will continue their work over the remainder of the weekend.

The fatal blaze was a "timely reminder of the need to have an escape plan, as fire moves incredibly fast", both organisations said today.
