Armed police cordoned Invercargill Street

Armed police cordoned of a south Invercargill street this afternoon.

Police were called to Ythan St, Appleby, following a report of an altercation involving two men, one of whom may have have a firearm, about 2.10pm.

That call prompted armed police to set up cordons, with the Armed Offenders Squad called but not deployed.

'The matter was resolved with out incident and no firearm was involved', Senior Sergeant Dave Scott, of Dunedin, said.

A 26-year-old Invercargill man was arrested for possession of an offensive weapon.

Police were still trying to locate a 21-year-old in connection with the incident.
