Body of missing boatie found

The body of a missing boatie has been recovered from a Canterbury lake by police divers this afternoon.

Bradley Richard Ivan Stempa, 21, has been confirmed dead by police.

Mr Stempa and a friend had been fishing at Lake Lyndon yesterday.

Police reported that he had swam out without a lifejacket to retrieve an inflatable boat that had floated away.

He was last seen 100m from the shore, police say.

The weather was fine but soon started to deteriorate. Water temperatures at Lake Lyndon are typically 5-7C at this time of year.

A search and rescue operation was launched, with police divers joining the search today.

At around 3pm divers recovered a body from the lake, police say.

They named the missing man as Mr Stempa but said the formal identification process was underway.

"Police are not making any further comment at this time," a statement said.

Victim Support assistance has been offered to the family.
