A female tourist is dead and two other visitors have been flown to hospital in serious conditions after a head-on car crash in South Canterbury today.

The smash happened on the State Highway 79 Geraldine-Fairlie road about midday, said police and emergency services, who were still at the scene.

The female tourist has been confirmed dead, while two other tourists - a male and female - had been flown to Christchurch Hospital with serious injuries, police said.

A man has also been taken to Timaru Hospital by road and is described as being in a moderate condition.

SH79 is still closed between Geraldine and Fairlie and diversions are likely to remain in place for some time.

The death has been referred to the coroner.

No names would be released until next of kin had been fully informed, police said.
