North Canterbury crash victim named

A 19-year-old man who died following a crash in North Canterbury yesterday afternoon has been named.

He was Aaron Thomson-Clark, also known as Aaron James, from Leithfield.

Emergency services were called to the crash on State Highway 1 outside Waikuku's service station, 30km north of Christchurch, yesterday afternoon.

Mr Thomson-Clark was the front-seat passenger in a stationary car indicating to turn right into the petrol station when it was rear-ended from behind, and pushed into oncoming traffic, police said.

He was flown to Christchurch Hospital in a critical condition yesterday and died last night.

His death has been referred to the coroner and his family have asked for privacy. Police investigations into the cause of the crash were ongoing.

There have now been three deaths on Canterbury roads already this week.
