A teenager has pleaded guilty to attacking good Samaritan Lucy Knight as she intervened during a bag snatch outside a supermarket.

Hendrix Hauwai, 17, pleaded guilty to aggravated wounding and assault with intent to rob after the incident on September 23.

This morning at North Shore District Court his lawyer spoke about the teenager's intention to make amends but details were suppressed by Judge Lawrence Hinton.

Ms Knight, 43, underwent surgery to relieve bleeding on her brain after she tried to stop Hauwai stealing a handbag from a woman outside Countdown in Northcote.

The mother of six fell and fractured her skull in the incident, which happened in front of her young children.

She was moved from Auckland City Hospital to a brain injury rehabilitation centre last week and went home for the first time at the weekend for her daughter Laura's 22nd birthday.

A Givealittle page set up by friends raised nearly $270,000 for Ms Knight's family.

Hauwai was remanded in custody and will be sentenced in December.
