Choppers used to fight Marlborough blaze

A fire which raged across six hectares of Blenheim's Wither Hills Farm Park today has been brought under control.

New Zealand Fire Service shift manager Andrew Norris said three appliances and a van operating as a command point left the scene around 2pm after the fire was contained.

Marlborough Kaikoura's Rural Fire Authority are now in charge and have been using three helicopters to extinguish the fire, which is less than 5km from Blenheim's airport and the Wither Hills winery.

"A fire started in a pine plantation on the South Side of the Rotary Lookout on the Wither Hills Farm Park at approximately 11.45am," Marlborough District Council's Emergency Operations Centre said.

"The fire is currently burning through pine trees and scrub.

"The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the police and Rural Fire.

Residents are advised to keep off the Farm Park and surrounding roads until further notice.

No properties are currently in danger.
