An investigation into Cabinet Minister Gerry Brownlee's airport security breach is complete, and are due to be released today.

The Civil Aviation Authority launched an inquiry following an incident at Christchurch Airport before the election, when the then Transport Minister and two of his staff deliberately bypassed airport security in order to catch a flight.

Mr Brownlee admitted he broke aviation rules and offered his resignation to Prime Minister John Key, who declined it.

Yesterday Mr Key said he had been made aware of the findings of the CAA report, but would not disclose them, Newstalk ZB reported.

He declined to comment on the report, saying he would talk about it today following its release.

At the time of the security breach in July, Mr Brownlee apologised for his actions.

"Running late for a plane this morning, I took a door that is normally used for an exit at Christchurch airport onto the forecourt ... and you're supposed to go through airport security," Mr Brownlee said.

"I didn't initially consider that it was a huge problem. [Only after a phone call from Aviation Security] I suddenly realised, 'Hell, this is a pretty serious matter'.

"I should have known. There's no question, that's why I've offered the resignation."

However, Mr Key said while he was "really disappointed" in Mr Brownlee, he did not think it was necessary for him to resign, backing the "tremendous things" he'd done during his time as a minister.

Mr Brownlee is now Minister of Defence, and minister in charge of the Christchurch rebuild.
