A homicide investigation has been launched after a man died shortly after turning up to a south Auckland medical centre seeking treatment for what is believed to have been stab wounds.
Police were called to the Takanini Care Accident and Emergency Clinic, on Great South Road, last night where a male collapsed outside the entrance shortly before 8pm.
A witness, who did not want to be named, said emergency staff surrounded a person lying on the ground.
After a few minutes, officers and medical staff stopped working on the man.
"They covered the body with a sheet and then removed the blankets around him.
He was dead."
A white company van standing nearby was thought to have been the vehicle in which the man was brought to the clinic.
A worker at a nearby BP petrol station said a fireman had told him that the man had been fatally injured.
"I spoke to one of the firemen. He said that [the guy] got stabbed and he's died - he's lost his life."
While another witness told the Herald that the medical centre's entrance had been covered by large blue tarpaulins, blocking anyone from seeing inside.
"It looks like a crime scene - there are police officers everywhere, cop cars and three ambulance vehicles."
In a statement released last night, police said they had launched an investigation following the incident, in which a male had arrived at the clinic with serious injuries.
This morning, police confirmed it was a homicide investigation.
