Complaint laid against former MP

Police have confirmed they are assessing a complaint concerning a former MP who tweeted the name of a prominent Central Otago man with permanent name suppression.

The former National Party MP took to Twitter on Monday to name the prominent Central Otago man.

The man's lawyer, Jonathan Eaton QC, told the Otago Daily Times a ''formal complaint was lodged with the NZ Police'' that evening.

Yesterday, a police spokesman confirmed a complaint had been received, which was ''currently being assessed''.

The former MP tweeted the same night ''I'll cop whatever comes. Lol may even apply for name suppression haha''.

The man's victim, Central Otago woman Louise Hemsley, who won a legal battle to have her suppressed name lifted, told the ODT the former MP was a ''brave man''.

''He is going to cop everything now.''

The Central Otago man was granted name suppression when he appeared in the Dunedin District Court earlier this year on an indecency charge.

He was discharged without conviction, on payment of $6500 reparation to the complainant.

In August 2012, he pleaded guilty to a charge of performing an indecent act.
