Police to target any speed over posted limit

From Monday, motorists driving any speed above the posted limit could find themselves with a ticket.

Police will launch their summer road campaign "Reach the Beach" on Monday, to coincide with the new alcohol limits.

Commissioner Mike Bush and Minister of Police Michael Woodhouse were at Piha today to launch the campaign.

Mr Bush said drivers need to forget the old message of a 4 km/h or 10 km/h above the speed limit tolerance and drive to the posted limit.

"Do not drive at anything over the limit. That is a focus for us."

Mr Bush said motorists driving anywhere above the limit could face fines.

"It will depend upon the circumstances and our officers have always had discretion."

Mr Bush said at the end of the summer campaign he would assess the message around speed tolerance, but he imagined the message would stay the same.

Mr Woodhouse said he was confident the campaign would mean less fatal and serious crashes over the summer months.

"What the police had said is the limit is the limit, and i think that's really important.

"I'm sure the police will take a sensible approach to enforcing it."

He said he believed New Zealand could soon be realistic in setting a goal of zero deaths on our roads.
