Whanganui River body identified

Police have identified the body that was recovered from the Whanganui River yesterday as Jayden Tilby, 24.

Police said preliminary post mortem results suggest Mr Tilby drowned, and the death was being treated as unexplained.

A large canoe was also found floating in the Whanganui River on Saturday afternoon in the vicinity of the City Bridge and Putiki areas.

Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Phil Taylor said Mr Tilby was last seen at about 9am on Saturday in Wilson Street in Wanganui on his bicycle, and his movements after that time remain unclear.

"We want to speak to anyone who saw him after 9am or noticed the canoe floating in the river on the Saturday."

Police described Mr Tilby's bike as a silver adult bicycle.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Constable Simon Beswarick at the Whanganui Police station on (06) 213 4198.

Information can also be provided anonymously to the organisation Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
