Human remains found on Coromandel beach

Human remains have been discovered on a Coromandel beach.

Police said the bones were found by a visitor in an area of the beach that was corroding, and were later handed in to officers at the Auckland Police Station.

The bones were now being examined to determine how old they were, police said.

Police said human remains that predated the European settlement were known to be found in the area.

They said any "discoveries" of this type should always be left in place, and then reported to police as soon as possible.
