Wellington trains delayed by scrub fire

Dozens of passengers are stuck on a train after a fire broke out beside a railway in Wellington today.

The Fire Service was fighting the blaze near Takapu Station, in the Wellington suburb of Tawa this afternoon.

"Once that's extinguished we're going to evacuate approximately 80 people from the train and they'll be taken to an area of safety, north, along the rail corridor towards Takapu station," said Murray Dunbar, Fire Service shift commander.

He said reports the train itself was ablaze were incorrect.

"It wasn't the train that was on fire. It was a scrub fire that was caused by a tree coming down, that took down the power lines in the area."

Five fire engines were at the scene.

Train services between Wellington and Porirua were suspended.

TranzMetro said buses had replaced services on the Kapiti Line.
