Regular visitor dies at Christchurch pool

An elderly woman who died at a Christchurch swimming pool today was a regular visitor, the city council says.

The woman was swimming in the sport pool at Jellie Park Recreation and Sport Centre in the western suburbs of Christchurch shortly before 11am when police say she suffered a suspected heart attack.

A spokesman for St John said they sent two ambulances and two rapid response vehicles. The Fire Service also attended.

Several members of the public carried out CPR on the woman, but she died at the scene, St John said.

The death has been referred to the coroner, said a spokesman for the police southern communication centre.

A Christchurch City Council spokeswoman said the sport pool has been closed for the rest of today. It is expected to reopen tomorrow morning.

John Filsell, the city council's unit manager recreation and sport, said the woman was a regular customer.

"The family has been advised and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time," he said.
