A driver has died after a car smashed into a tree in Waikato this morning.
The crash took place near the intersection of Havelock Rd and State Highway 1 at Ngaruawahia shortly before 4.30am.
The driver was critically injured when paramedics arrived. Attempts to save the person were unsuccessful, and they died at the scene, an ambulance spokeswoman said.
There were no other occupants in the vehicle.
Diversions were in place at SH1 and Havelock Rd for northbound traffic, and at Ellery St and SH1 for southbound traffic.
The diversions were expected to remain in place until at least 8am.
The serious crash unit would investigate, police said.
