Police are looking for a tramper who has failed to return to collect gear left in a hut.
Another tramper found a bag at the West Sabine Hut in Nelson Lakes National Park with a note attached saying the owner would be back to collect it on April 7.
Police were alerted on Wednesday that the owner had still not returned.
The bag contained clothing and tramping boots.
A helicopter with search and rescue personnel is checking the area this afternoon.
Police would like to hear from the person who left the bag, anyone who knows who they might be, or anyone who was tramping in the West Sabine area in the past fortnight.
