Police are investigating the sexual assault of a woman near the Maitai River in Nelson overnight.
The woman had been socialising at a Bridge Street bar and left between midnight and 1am with a man she had met.
They walked down Collingwood St and onto Riverside Drive, where the man sexually assaulted the woman, police said.
The woman, who was traumatised by the incident, has undergone a medical examination and is receiving specialist support.
The offender is described as in his early 30s, possibly Maori but with pale skin and a beard.
Police want to speak to anyone in the Riverside Drive area between midnight and 1am, or who anyone with any relevant information.
