Nelson police recover burnt out car

Police have recovered a car in which a person died after it went down a bank and was engulfed in flames.

Tasman District police said a post-mortem examination would be held to identify the person found dead in the Nissan Sunny.

A police spokeswoman said DNA analysis might be needed and that could take a while to process.

The car went down a bank on the Whangamoa Saddle on Saturday.

Forensic scientists, fire investigators, vehicle inspectors and crash investigators would now examine the car.

Police expected some preliminary reports later today and also hoped to complete their scene examination today.

"Police would like to thank those people who have come forward to date with information and are still keen to speak to anyone who saw the vehicle between 1 and 2pm on Sunday in the Whangamoa Saddle area," police added.
