Sentencing for Ryder assault today

Two men who admitted assaulting cricket star Jesse Ryder outside a bar will be sentenced today.

Craig O'Neill, a Canterbury builder, was initially charged with assault and injuring with reckless disregard for the safety of Mr Ryder.

The cricketer was in an induced coma for nearly three days after the assault.

Craig's nephew Dylan O'Neill, a carpet layer, earlier admitted a charge of assault following the altercation with Mr Ryder outside a Merivale bar on the night of March 28, 2013.

In February, name suppression for Craig, 39, and 22 year-old Dylan lapsed.

After the O'Neills received interim name suppression at their first court appearance, Christchurch man Jordan Mason used his cellphone to film the pair.

A police officer spoke to Mason outside court, advising him of the suppression order and warned against doing anything with his footage.

But Mason ignored the advice and uploaded the footage of the two men to YouTube.

Mason was convicted and sentenced to two months' community detention and 140 hours' community work for filming the video and disseminating it.

The O'Neills will be sentenced in Christchurch District Court today.
