Man due in court over car chase

A man charged over a dramatic police chase spanning almost 20km across Auckland will appear in court this morning.

The 36-year-old from Northland was yesterday remanded in custody and granted name suppression overnight by Judge Lawrence Hinton at the North Shore District Court overnight until he was assigned a lawyer.

He is expected to appear again this morning with legal representation.

The man faces 11 charges over a lengthy police chase through Auckland on Tuesday, which sent pedestrians and children diving for cover and kept residents holed up inside their homes as police searched for the offender.

The defendant is alleged to have stolen a car and attempted to carjack others during the ordeal.

He was arrested after being found asleep on a couch in a Belmont property around 4pm by the occupants of the house.

The charges include entering a property without consent, taking a vehicle without claim, theft or car keys, dangerous driving and failing to stop after an accident.
