Wild weather strips Auckland of power

Close to 800 people in the Auckland region are without power after wild weather which swept through Auckland last night took out powerlines in four areas.

Vector Limited spokesperson Sandy Hodge said crews were working to restore power to customers in Bethells Beach, Muriwai and Kakanui.

There are 10 households in Muriwai, 688 in Bethells Beach and 84 Kakanui affected by the power outage. Power has been restored to Glen Eden residents.

"All three outages were to do with vegetation brought down on lines," Ms Hodge said. "With the Bethells one in particular, it was really quite a large tree that has come down so what they are trying to do is cut a hole around the branches so they can get some lines restrung rather than trying to take the tree away and then trying to do the lines."
