Man burned in school boiler accident

A man has been burned after an incident involving a boiler at an Auckland school.

Emergency services were called to Greenmeadows Intermediate School in Manurewa this afternoon.

St John was called about 1.45pm and paramedics treated a man, believed to be the caretaker, for moderate injuries.

The man reportedly suffered burns to his face after he opened the boiler's hatch to check on the fire, and discovered it was bigger than he expected.

A police spokeswoman said the boiler appeared to backfire and did not explode, as has previously been reported.

A Fire Service spokesman said two crews were sent to the school, and one remains at the scene.

The man was taken by ambulance to Middlemore Hospital's emergency department.
